  • Sophomore Year!!

Back to good old LBC, and not a thing has changed. Well, I'm a sophomore now. That's different I guess. The only thing that's really much different is that I'm learning firsthand all the woes of taking God & the Bible at 8 am on Monday mornings....and....other reasons. That's all I'm going to say for that one, except that if tough classes build character this one's going to make me a Joan of Arc by midterm time!

Oh yeah, and I forgot to mention the other thing that's different. There's bells in the chapel steeple now that ring every half hour. Except they're not real bells, it's just an electronic recording, and not a very good one at that, so when you hear it makes you think more of someone beating on frying pans or garbage can lids than anything else. Yes, it really is that terrible. I would say you should hear it for yourself, but I wouldn't wish something that mean on anyone.

Now for the good stuff -- I have no classes tomorrow so I'm taking the day off and going to Root's with Dave and Tiffani! Should be pretty fun....

  • Folder 1 of family vacation photos
    General family/scenery photos: 44
    Baby photos: 55

Folder 2 of family vacation photos
    General family/scenery photos: 47
    Baby photos: 92

Interesting, isn't it? The baby isn't unique to the vacation experience, but for some reason it wins the photo numbering contest hands-down. I was looking through some of my photo files today and was struck by this. I'm wondering if following your kid throughout the day with the camera can give them the idea that every move they make is wonderful, in which case before long you are going to have one heck of a spoiled kid on your hands? Being excessively photographed and videoed doesn't seem to do anything real constructive for them in the way of making them behave better or feel more loved (if it did, we'd notice a remarkably drastic improvement in kid's behavior all across the US since digital cameras became so popular!). And what about those of us who were born in the dark ages of the 70's and 80's, and even the early 90's, whose parents because they did not have access to the technology (or simply because they had more to do in a day than sit around snapping pictures of us) did not record our first, second, and one-thousandth smile to post on the internet or burn on DVD for every living relative in the family? I'm definitely sure that the number of photos in our family album of my early childhood is under 10,000. Hey, my self-esteem may never recover--I can sue someone for this I think! .....JUST KIDDING! Yes, the first 5-10 years of my life went pretty much undocumented by today's standards--and I think I turned out ok in spite of it.

  • Aaaaaaaaah I have not written in such a long time. These things [blogs] are so much fun when you start them and so annoying for ever after that. Not that I have much to tell you and not that I will probably be any more consistent with writing once school starts. I'm looking forward to it in a way, but I know I will probably be taking that back by next week when I have piles of papers to write.

  • Elizabeth came to visit at LBC this weekend. It was great to see her. She and I and Elisia went to see Spiderman 3 - which I wasn't super excited about doing at first since I haven't seen the first two movies - but I enjoyed it pretty well. I can see why so many people like it - just enough action for the guys and enough drama for the girls. There were so many fight scenes though that it got boring after a while. Well, the end of the movie is kind of sad - Harry Osborn bites the dust - after he and Peter make up of course. They just can't let the guy die mad at the hero. He was also horning in on Mary Jane, so the producers had to get rid of him somehow. Cardinal rule in movies: if two guys are after the same girl, and one of the guys is the hero, say goodbye to the other guy. He's a goner.

Other than that, very good. I'd like to see the other two movies now....

  • Currently Reading
    This Present Darkness
    By Frank E. Peretti
    see related
Just in case you're looking for anything interesting to read, that book up there is a good one. I think out of everything churned out by Peretti, this one's the best. The Oath was quite good as well, but darker, bloodier, and more allusions to illicit sex and garbage like that. But still, overall, a very good book by a very good author. They're Christian, but not overly so in the gushy rhetorical sense, like a certain other crime novel series that I read recently, the name of which totally escapes me right now.... but yeah, nothing is more irritating than mystery books (of all things) that are sentimental and preachy. Come on now people, mysteries are supposed to be chilling and thrilling, not didactic! Don't mix your genres, we learned that in Hermeneutics....

All right, now that I've given my plug for reading and spooky stories, let's have another one, for....

    hiking!!!

That's me sitting on the tunnel at the end of the trail in Shenk's Ferry, if you noticed. It's kind of a neat walk, not very challenging but pleasant and relaxing if you're ever in the mood to get away from all the cow fields in Lancaster.

    Bye for now!

  • So when I got in from class today, I found a new wall decoration had wandered its way into my room (Dave's old room), deposed my tye-dye wall-hanging from Mexico, and tacked itself up in its place. It was a rasterized image of the Housatonic River plus the last few boxcars of a departing train. It was the same picture that had been used for the banner on the home page of the old campct.org. Perfect! It could stay, I decided. The next thing I noticed was my camera on my desk slightly out of place, it was leaning against the keyboard instead of next to it, where I usually keep it (tech freaks just notice when their toys have been touched, what can I say). I turned it on to view mode, cause I just had a funny feeling something would be there, and this is what was there:

Yep.... Dave strikes again! You couldn't have asked for a better scene really (for me at least). Now I will be even less motivated to study than I was before! because I have something better to look at than books.

For yall that don't know what a raster is, it's an image made of thousands of little dots or pixels all carefully sized and arranged. Up close, the picture looks like this:

But step back, and this is what you see:

It's one of those games that imagery plays with your brain. All those dots are dizzying though. Don't look at it up close, it might make you sick

  • A Week In the Life of an LBC Freshman - Part 6

So Friday. End of the week at last. Or nearly. On Friday mornings at 9 instead of chapel I have LIFE group, which basically amounts to 5 or 6 people sitting around and talking for an hour about ... stuff. Seriously, whatever's running through their heads. And some of it is pretty interesting. We share prayer requests, but never get around to actually praying, which is a new idea to me... I talked about it to Dave, and he thought that was pretty funny as well.

Me: They call it LIFE group, which is stands for Loving Intentional Fellowship Encouragement, but mostly we just sit around and talk about people in our dorm.... who's dating, who's fighting with who.... that sort of stuff....

    Dave: Well.... that's LIFE!

All too true. Well, after class was over at 11, I went to the library (always in the library, are you starting to see a thread here?) and got some help from Mr. L. tying flies before class. There were these two people sitting at the other table in the back of the library studying, or at least pretending.... I'm sure they wondered what I was doing. I wonder that myself sometimes.

So on Fridays after Bib Herm I have fly fishing class from 2 until 3, or at least it's supposed to be until 3 but almost never is. Last week I didn't get out until 4, and this week was no exception.... Today we learned how to tie ants and sowbugs, and although that doesn't sound fun it is sort of interesting in a way. Uncle Bob says he's never caught anything on the river with either of those, so maybe I will have to save them for some time when I fish on a lake or a pond or something.

This evening I talked to Jon and he read me some stories from his Joan N the Whale book. It's been a long time since we've just talked like that, and I didn't realized how much I missed it.

  • A Week in the Life of an LBC Freshman - Part 5

Hmmmmm today was a rough day. Thursdays are always kind of rough cause its a tough schedule I have, but this one was more so for some reason. Three different professors in three different classes talked about family tragedies and how we have to trust God that he's in control of whatever happens.... by the third time I wanted to say "Ok I get the point!" but wasn't sure who to say it to because I hadn't talked to any of them about what's been happening.... creepy, no? That was hard.

I got out of math class early though, so that was nice kind of. I had my Christian service in Lancaster city today, along with the rest of my group: Jon, Alyssa, Branden, Amanda, Jill, James, and Jeff. We played kickball with the kids and now I have a super wicked headache because they are so loud and I wasn't feeling well to begin with really. I had to walk over to the library after dinner to get something from my Mr. L. for class tomorrow, but he forgot to bring it. So that ended up being a waste of time. Then it started pouring as I was walking home. Walking home on the muddy soccer field in a cold March rain was the final insult of the day.
